Vice President, Co-founder
Mballing Cham
Mballing Cham Colley was born in The Republic of the Gambia in a rural village of 15,000 inhabitants. She learned first hand the role of hard-working rural Gambian women. For many years, she worked in the family’s gardens starting at 5 A.M. and then later in the day brought the produce to the market and sold it so she could buy food for her family. There was no time or money for schooling. Education for girls was not considered important.
Mballing was pregnant at 16 and as most of the women and girls in the village, she delivered her baby at home. She was back in the garden and at the market a few days after giving birth. Mballing’s second pregnancy at age 19 was again completely without medical care, and Mballing experienced excruciating pain on the delivery, pain which lasted for 4-5 months. Fortunately, she recovered, but she saw that many women and girls in the village died from complications connected to childbirth without medical care. This dire situation continues now, making pregnancy a death sentence for far too many Gambian women in rural villages.
At age 33, Mballing sought asylum in the USA due to violence in The Gambia, and she is now a US citizen, and a home health agency owner.
She never tires of caring for others, works very long hours and is very successful in her work. Mballing was able to bring her two daughters to the USA, and she is extremely proud of Matida, the first person in her entire family to attend college. Seven years ago, when Mballing gave birth to her twins, she experienced how women giving birth are treated by doctors in a modern hospital, and although it was a high risk pregnancy, good medical care including a c-section saved the lives of her babies and herself.
In 2020, Mballing has seen too many of her Gambian relatives and friends die from childbirth and from the Covid 19 virus. Mballing’s grief at daily sad news from the Gambia has inspired her to take action and join with her daughter Matida Bojang in the creation of The Mbama Care Foundation, USA, Inc., with the goal to bring relief and health care changes for Gambian women and families.
