
The Gambian Women’s Lives Matter march–an effort lead and founded by Mbama Care founders, Mballing Cham and Matida Bojang–took place on September 23rd, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. Hundreds of women and men peacefully marched while chanting, “no woman should die in labor”.
Additionally, a letter that was written by the Gambian Women’s Lives Matter movement executive team was read at the march. In the letter, the members made several requests:
- Established a joint Commission to regulate and monitor all activities of private and public health centers, hospitals, laboratories, and pharmacies in providing safe, effective and quality healthcare.
- Confidential inquiry system to provide detailed information about maternal death and publication of such information and tracking of recommendation made.
- Government to set up a monitoring and evaluation team comprising representatives from various women and health organizations and the civil society.
- Provision of adequate financing for the health sector.
- Formulation of appropriate policies based on evidence-based medical guidelines
- Provision of proper healthcare infrastructure and equipment.
- Adequate supplies of drugs and blood.
- Improve transport and communication network.
- Information and education to promote health-seeking behavior.
- Access to quality family planning.
- Incorporation of emergency obstetric nursing care in the entire nursing training curriculum.
- Mandatory continuous medical and nursing education programs in maternal and child health care.
- Provision of standard primary healthcare services in all regions.
- Organizations to monitor the progress towards fulfilling our request.
